  1. Phase Ia_ arithmetic symbols + fourfold
    Systematic Innovation I Winter 2009

    Phase Ia, has two parts:
    part Ia.a: arithmetic symbols
    &
    Ia.b: fourfold.

    Ia.a_ arithmetic symbols
    - + ÷ x
    subtraction addition division multiplication

it has been a very long time since you have learned your arithmetic signs
you are well familiar with each one of the four signs
you know what each one does
you know how to use them
you have mastered the use of each sign

in this exercise you will encounter these signs anew
    rather than using them
you will explore their individual qualities

Each group will select two signs. Each group will draw their signs on their given pages, one on each page, as large as the page itself. After a few moments of reflection, confronting their experience of each sign, each group will list as many words or concepts as they can think of on each of the pages.
As you investigate each of the signs, think about:
What does it make you think of?
How does it make you feel?
What does it do on the page- what is its spatial impact on the page- both in rational and emotional sense?
    What does it signify?
Why could be the reason for it to represent what it does?
What are some formal and spatial significance of its form?
Can you imagine as its formal and spatial possibilities of it?

One of the most influential essays in today’s theoretical discussions of architecture, is an essay titled “Building, Dwelling, Thinking” published in 1971 in the book Poetry Language Thought. In this essay German Philosopher Martin Heidegger, discussed the meaning of space, place, dwelling, building and much more…. In this theoretical investigation Heidegger defined the term “fourfold.”

Each group will read the given material on “fourfold,” discuss it’s meaning in terms of: earth, sky, mortals and divinities. Using the given page, each group will take two of the four criteria and try to draw and describe what Heidegger was trying to convey.

After all the groups present their explorations to class, class as a whole will discuss the subject and it’s possible significance.

Based on the these investigations, each student will explore the subject matter by:

    1. Reflecting on the subject and discussions in a couple of paragraphs
    2. Expressing through diagrams, drawings, or sketches their investigations
    3. Each group will create a C-map to combine the findings
    4. Each group will create a shared diagram to communicate the outcome of their explorations
    5. Each student will write one or two paragraph, an individual reflection to discuss the learning

    DUE: 01/12/09
    class presentations
    paragraphs/drawings/sketches

    DUE: 01/26/09
    digital submission
    paragraphs/drawings/sketches + individual reflections

  2. When we hear the word dwelling we think of a space like a room or building as shelter of some sort. But when we hear the root word dwell we think of walking around viewing and experiencing things as we think about them. Heidegger thinks of dwelling as living life; not just a building or space but the process of building that space or building as well as living in it going outside of it experiencing other things in the universe outside of the building. Heidegger says, “Building is really dwelling, Building as dwelling unfolds into the building that cultivates growing things and the building that erects buildings, dwelling in the sense of the stay of mortals on earth. We do lose touch of the true meanings of words.

Heidegger’s Fourfold is an interesting concept. Heidegger’s fourfold is the oneness of Earth, sky, divinities, and mortals. Heidegger says earth is the serving bearer. I completely agree with this because the earth holds us and provides everything we need to continue life. His view of the sky I somewhat agree with by his saying we leave to the sun and the moon their journey, to the stars their courses. We are now exploring in and beyond the sky and past the stars, affecting the seasons and climate by our abuse to the Earth. The discussion about divinities I cannot really touch upon because this is a subject I know little about. However, through experiencing people I can agree with Heidegger’s statement that people await the divinities as divinities, in hope they hold up to the divinities what is unhoped for.
I can say mortals are abusing the land that gives us life and squeezing the earth until it is no longer possible for our existence on the land.

I found it interesting how the arithmetic symbols related to Heidegger’s fourfold. When investigating and thinking about the minus sign before reading Fourfold I came up with:

    One horizontal line
    Something simple
Making a crossing out motion (starting with large, crossing out, ending with smaller)
    Divide page
*One world on top, another on bottom
    Horizontal-stable, Vertical-unstable
    Horizon
    End of land/end of sky
    Land/sky
    Meeting point
    Fold/crease
    Bind
    Divided in 2
Thin line between love & hate
    Solid/void
    Tightrope
When investigating and thinking about the plus sign before reading Fourfold I came up with:
Two lines or sticks together (like putting numbers together)
Creating 4 spaces, lines bond spaces
Sense of security no matter which way it is turned
    Nothing lost
Directs you to point of intersection (come together like numbers coming together)
    Intersection
    Point of view
    Divided
    Flag
    Cross
    Hospital
    Window
    4 sections
    Connect 4
    Propeller
    Segregated
    *4 worlds

If you pay attention to the words I came up with for the minus sign; 2 worlds, horizon, end of sky, end of land, land/sky, you will see the direct connection with the Fourfold but with two of the concepts earth and sky. Now when I think of the plus sign I can see that two more regions are added which could be mortals and divinities. So all together the earth and sky may have came first as of the minus sign, and then mortals and divinities came as of the addition sign.
